Job description
SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) Manager:

Working within the Group Compliance department, at our Gateshead Head Office, the SHEQ Manager will advise on all matters in relation to Health & Safety, including Environment and Quality aspects, helping to ensure standards are maintained. The SHEQ Manager will play a crucial role in promoting safety, environmental responsibility and quality assurance while supporting the organization's operational efficiency and regulatory compliance. They will be responsible for promoting a culture of support and continuous improvement within the group and will be required travel to various sites.

Qualifications:

· NEBOSH - National General Certification

· ISO 9001 Internal Auditor Certification

· WAMITAB or CIWM Qualification, Desirable

Key skills:

Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations, environmental legislation, and quality control standards specific to the waste industry.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, adaptability and willingness to learn with the ability to interact effectively with various stakeholders, including government agencies, waste management companies, and facility managers.


Analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly for conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and root cause analysis.
Proficiency in IT systems, especially Office 365 applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, Power BI for report writing, data analysis, and presentation creation.

Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, crucial for maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Leadership and management qualities, including the ability to influence others and drive cultural change towards safety and environmental responsibility.

Technical understanding of waste management technologies and processes, including recycling systems and a keen aptitude to learn new systems quickly.

Health & Safety

  • Provide frontline health and safety advice to staff and contractors on site
  • Conduct and review risk assessments and implement effective risk control measures
  • Review, develop and implement method statements and safe systems of work and updating existing procedures as required.
  • Oversee and maintain emergency plans and incident command structures
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and regulations
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, conducting root cause analysis

Environment

  • Maintain compliance with environmental permits and relevant legislation across the group
  • Oversee and implement energy management programs and sustainability initiatives
  • Monitor and control environmental impacts, including emissions to air, land, noise, vibration, and chemical exposure.
  • Stay updated on Waste and Haulage industry regulations and participate in regulatory consultation exercises

Quality

  • Report and implement quality control programs and report on quality performance
  • Ensure outputs/products and services meet the highest quality standards in line with agreed specifications with clients
  • Perform quality checks on output fractions to confirm products match or exceed agreed specifications.

Management Systems

  • Review, monitor, communicate and implement SHEQ policies and procedures throughout the group
  • Conduct internal and external audits with the ESG & Sustainability Director and liaise with certification bodies and key customers
  • Maintain and improve integrated management systems (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001)
