What Is a Battery Bin?

A battery bin is a designated container for the safe segregation of waste batteries.

Batteries, particularly lithium-ion, present a significant fire and environmental risk if damaged, mixed, or incorrectly stored.

- Our battery bins are designed to:
- Reduce ignition risk
- Prevent contamination
- Support safe on-site segregation
- Ensure compliant storage under UK regulations

How It Works

Bin Delivery

We deliver the right battery collection containers to your sites - countertop, undercounter, or floor-standing - matched to your volume and operational setup. Containers stay on-site for ongoing use between collections.

On-Site WEEE Segregation

Customers, students, staff, or visitors place used batteries into the clearly-marked, fire-resistant containers. Batteries are segregated from general waste at the point of generation, eliminating fire risk and keeping you compliant with hazardous waste obligations.

ADR-Compliant Collection

Once your containers are ready for emptying, we collect nationwide using ADR-compliant transport to prevent fire or explosion hazards. Our own haulage fleet operates to dangerous goods regulations with trained drivers and specialist vehicles. Collections are scheduled around your volumes — whether that's weekly, monthly, or on-demand.

Sorting & Licensed Treatment

Batteries are sorted by chemistry - lithium-ion, lead-acid, alkaline, NiCd, button cells - as different chemistries require different treatment routes. Lithium-ion batteries are depolluted and dismantled safely. Lead-acid batteries are drained and broken down for material recovery. All processes meet hazardous waste and ADR regulatory standards.

Material Recovery & Recycling

Recovered materials - lithium, cobalt, lead, nickel, plastics, and metals - are sent to approved downstream recyclers for reuse in new products. Nothing goes to landfill or incineration.

Documentation & Reporting

Every collection is fully documented. You receive duty of care paperwork, hazardous waste consignment notes, ADR transport documentation, weight data, and ESG-ready reports. Everything you need for compliance checks and sustainability disclosures.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Are retailers legally required to provide battery collection points?
Yes. Under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations, retailers selling more than 32 kg of batteries per year must provide a free take-back facility for customers returning used batteries. The containers must be visible and accessible.
Why are batteries classified as hazardous waste?
Batteries contain hazardous chemicals including lithium, lead, mercury, cadmium, and sulphuric acid. If disposed of in general waste or landfill, these chemicals can leach into soil and groundwater. Lithium-ion batteries also pose a significant fire and explosion risk when crushed or damaged.
Which container is right for my site?
It depends on your volume and available space. Countertop tubs (5L and 10L) suit retail point-of-sale for customer take-back. Undercounter boxes (16L) are ideal where space is tight. For high-volume sites like DIY stores, retailers, or HWRCs, undercounter barrels (30L, 60L, and 120L) or floor-standing bins provide greater capacity. Our team will recommend the right option for your setup.
Do I have to buy the bins or can I lease them?
The bins remain GAP's property - you don't buy or lease them. We supply the containers as part of your collection service agreement. They stay on-site between collections and we maintain or replace them as needed.
Do I need to sort batteries by type before putting them in the bin?
No. You can place all battery types in the same bin. We sort batteries by chemistry (lithium-ion, lead-acid, alkaline, NiCd, button cells) at our facility, as different chemistries require different treatment routes.
How often will you collect from my battery bins?
Collections are scheduled based on your volumes and site requirements. We can provide regular weekly or monthly collections, or a responsive on-demand service where you contact us when containers are ready for emptying.
What happens to batteries once you collect them?
Batteries are sorted by chemistry. Lithium-ion batteries are depolluted and dismantled safely. Lead-acid batteries are drained and broken down for material recovery. Recovered materials - lithium, cobalt, lead, nickel - are sent to approved downstream recyclers. Nothing goes to landfill or incineration.
What does ADR-compliant transport mean?
ADR (Agreement on Dangerous Goods by Road) is the regulation governing safe transport of hazardous materials. Lithium-ion batteries are classified as dangerous goods, requiring trained drivers, specialist vehicles, and proper documentation. GAP's collections meet ADR requirements.
Can you supply battery bins to multiple sites?
Yes. We provide battery bins and collection services across all UK sites under a single agreement. One supplier, consistent service, and unified documentation regardless of how many locations you operate.
What documentation will I receive?
You'll receive duty of care paperwork, hazardous waste consignment notes, ADR transport documentation, weight tickets, and ESG reports showing recycling rates, material recovery volumes, and carbon impact. Everything you need for hazardous waste reporting obligations, internal audits, and ESG disclosures.
Are you licensed to handle all battery types?
Yes. Our treatment facilities operate under Environmental Permits and hazardous waste licences. We're authorised to handle and treat all battery chemistries including lithium-ion, lead-acid, alkaline, NiCd, and button cells.
