Project Snapshot
Client: Currys & DHL
Sector: Retail & Logistics
Scale:
300 retail stores supported by 19 distribution centres across the UK
Challenge:
Battery fires in WEEE skips and inefficient handling processes requiring staff to constantly move waste outside
Solution:
Deployment of 300 WEEEBoxes across distribution centres with scheduled collections
Results:
Up to 1,500 tonnes of WEEE processed annually
The Challenge
Currys and DHL manage large volumes of electrical waste generated through retail returns, damaged products, and operational activities across their distribution network.
The existing process created several operational and safety challenges.
Loose electrical waste was frequently stored in large WEEE skips outside the building, requiring warehouse teams to regularly transport material from inside the facility to external containers.
This approach created two key issues:
- Increased fire risk due to lithium batteries entering mixed WEEE skips
- Operational inefficiency, with staff repeatedly transporting waste outside the building
With multiple distribution centres handling electrical waste daily, the business required a safer and more efficient system that could operate across a high-volume logistics environment.
The Solution
GAP Group implemented a structured WEEE collection model designed specifically for large logistics operations.
The solution included the deployment of 300 WEEEBoxes positioned throughout the distribution centres, allowing electrical waste to be safely stored at source rather than transported externally by staff.
Once full, boxes are rotated back to GAP Group’s processing facility as part of a scheduled twice-weekly collection service.
The programme now supports:
- 19 distribution centres across the UK
- Scheduled collections twice per week
- Up to 2,500 tonnes of WEEE handled annually
- A rotating system of 300 WEEEBoxes
This approach significantly reduced fire risk while streamlining the way waste is handled inside the warehouses.
All waste collected is processed directly through GAP Group’s facilities, ensuring full compliance and traceability.
The Results
The new system has delivered measurable operational improvements across the distribution network.
Key results include:
- 19 distribution centres supported nationwide
- 300 WEEEBoxes deployed across sites
- Up to 1,500 tonnes of WEEE processed per year
- Reduced battery fire risk from mixed WEEE skips
- Improved warehouse efficiency by eliminating constant waste movements outside
- Fully compliant electrical waste processing through a direct recycler
The solution has created a safer and more efficient electrical waste management process for one of the UK’s largest retail logistics networks.
