Project Snapshot
Client: Smyths Toys
Sector: Retail
Scale:
National retail network with approximately 110 stores across the UK
Challenge:
High store traffic and frequent product exchanges created operational pressure when handling returned electrical products and WEEE
Solution:
Deployment of WEEEBoxes, distribution centre trailer storage, and staff training to enable efficient internal box exchanges
Results:
Improved turnaround times, reduced road miles, and greater operational autonomy for store teams
The Challenge
Smyths Toys operates a busy national retail network where returned electrical products and faulty items must be processed quickly to maintain smooth store operations.
High customer traffic and frequent product exchanges meant electrical waste could build up quickly in stores. Managing this waste efficiently was essential to avoid disruption to daily operations.
The retailer required a solution that would:
- Enable quick turnaround on returned electrical products
- Reduce disruption within busy retail stores
- Simplify the handling of WEEE across multiple locations
- Maintain full compliance with electrical waste regulations
With over 100 stores nationwide, the business also needed a solution that could work efficiently within their existing logistics network.
The Solution
GAP Group implemented a WEEE recycling system designed to integrate with Smyths Toys’ existing distribution model.
The solution centred around the WEEEBox system, allowing electrical waste to be safely stored and easily transported between stores and distribution centres.
Key elements of the programme include:
- Stand trailers positioned at distribution centres for WEEE storage
- Surplus WEEEBoxes provided to stores to ensure availability
- Training for staff to enable internal box exchanges
- A streamlined process for managing returned electrical products
Because Smyths Toys’ distribution centres already deliver to stores daily, the WEEEBoxes can be exchanged through the existing logistics network, removing the need for additional collection journeys.
This approach creates a more efficient recycling system while maintaining full compliance.
The Results
The new system has delivered operational and environmental benefits across the retail network.
Key outcomes include:
- Approximately 110 retail stores supported nationwide
- Faster turnaround times for electrical product exchanges
- Reduced operational disruption within stores
- Greater autonomy for store teams managing WEEEBoxes
- Reduced carbon footprint through fewer dedicated collection journeys
- Lower road miles by utilising existing distribution centre transport routes
By integrating WEEE recycling into the retailer’s existing logistics infrastructure, the solution provides a more efficient and environmentally responsible approach to electrical waste management.
